Dana Airlines Limited, part of the Dana Group of Companies, is a fully private sector-owned carrier operating as Dana Air. Headquartered in Ikeja, Dana Air serves domestic routes to a handful of Nigerian destinations alongside its charter operations. Its white, red and blue aircraft, featuring the slogan “the smartest way to fly”, offer convenient and low cost flights. The airline is also responsible for the opeddration of a virtual carrier called Imo Air, operating regular scheduled passenger flights in Imo State.
Airline History
Dana Air (www.flydanaair.com) was founded in 2008 and ran incident free until June 2012. In an unfortunate accident, 153 passengers on board and 30 on the ground died, when one of the airline’s aircraft crashed into a built up area. Subsequently, all Dana Air flights were halted and the airline’s license was revoked by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). In September 2012 their license was restored, but the airline only started flying regular routes again on 26 January 2014.
Since the 2012 accident, Dana Air has participated in various training initiatives to ensure that they are always prepared for IATA Operational Safety Audits. This initiative is funded by the International Airline Training Fund (IATF) and Dana Air is one of ten airlines to benefit from it. Dana Air constantly reiterates that it is determined to provide its passengers with the highest global aviation safety standards and has since earned the trust of many public flyers.
The Dana Air Fleet
Dana Air currently has a fleet of 5 aircraft that includes one Boeing 737-500 and four McDonnell Douglas MD-83s, soon to be replaced by a Boeing 737-800. Dana Air is due to lease five Boeing 737-800s from Ryanair to bolster their fleet in the near future.
Dana Air’s Baggage Allowance and Limitations
Dana Air has various baggage allowances in place for travellers with a maximum weight of 30kg for Business Class passengers, 23kg for Economy Class passengers and10kg for infants. Hand luggage should not exceed 6kg or 45cm x 33cm x 20cm.

The in-flight experience
Dana Air passengers can expect a basic yet comfortable in-flight experience. As all the flights are domestic, no long haul entertainment or facilities are available. Music and videos are provided on all flights as well as light meals. Special meal requirements must be made known prior to departure. The airline also offers an in-flight magazine Cloud 9. Partnerships/Code Share Agreements Dana Air is currently in no partnerships with other airline service providers.

The airline recently partnered up with AYEEN to empower the youth of Nigeria, and it also served as the official airline of the National Security Summit 2017.
Dana Air, with its tumultuous history after the 2012 crash is said to have come a long way. When the airline re-opened for business in 2014, it did so under the command of Francois Bouteiller (Director of Flight Operations), previously the commander who produced the JAR Operating Manual (OM Part B) for the Swiss International Airlines fleet of AVRO RJ. Bouteiller, with 25 years of experience and a certified IOSA (IATA) Auditor, was set to turn the airline’s reputation around and earn the trust of the flying public once more.
