Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ.com), headquartered in Amman, Jordan, is the Jordanian flag carrier airline.
From its base at the Queen Alia International Airport, the airline operates over 500 scheduled regional and international flights per week across four continents. The airline has been operating since 1963, and was voted Airline of the Year 2007 by the Airfinance Journal after the company’s privatisation.
Royal Jordanian is a member of the Oneworld airlines alliance, and is also a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organisation. During 2010, it is reported that the airline transported over 3 million passengers.
Marketplace rivalry
While it was widely reported that Royal Jordanian was aiming to become the Middle East’s foremost regional airline by adding routes to destinations such as Alexandria and Aleppo in Syria, the airline has faced significant competition from the likes of Emirates, EgyptAir, EgyptAir Express and Middle East Airlines.
Destinations
Leveraging codeshare agreements with Air Berlin, British Airways, Gulf Air, Oman Air as well as Syrian Air and S7 Airlines, Royal Jordanian flies to over 100 cities on 4 continents. Key destinations include Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, Abu Dhabi in the UAE, Accra in Ghana, Aden in Yemen, Al Ain in the UAE and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia
Further afield, the airline also operates scheduled flights to Bahrain, Baghdad, Athens, Brussels, Barcelona, Bangkok, Budapest, Delhi, Detroit, Dubai and Frankfurt, to name but a few of its international flight destinations.
The Royal Jordanian Fleet
The airline’s fleet comprises a mix of Airbuses, including the A319, A320, A321, A330 and A340, as well as Embraer 175s and 195s for regional flights. The airline plans to have a fleet of 38 airplanes by 2017, including 11 Boeing 787s for long haul destinations.
The in-flight experience
Catering: Royal Jordanian to date remains the only international airline to offer Economy class passengers a choice of three meal options on any flight longer than two hours.
Entertainment: Most of the airline’s Airbuses are equipped with personal television sets, The onboard entertainment system, Sky Cinema, provides movies, TV shows music and other audiovisual entertainment.
Seating: Crown Class seating on the A340 aircraft are full flat-bed enabled. Economy seats offer a 34-inch seat pitch on board the Airbuses, and all seats offer a foot rest.
