Expected to launch in 2017, JetWest is the latest entrant into the Nigerian civil aviation industry. The airline seeks to disrupt the Nigerian air travel market through a combination of reliable, on time flights, world class service and ultra competitive pricing. While the airline will initially launch in Nigeria, it has ambitions for rapid route expansion into the rest of West Africa.
The airline’s slogan is “Now Everyone Can Fly” – and with good reason. By using a low cost, no frills model, the airline is aiming to make air travel accessible for millions of Nigerians and West Africans who can currently only afford road based travel.
The demand for affordable flights in West and Central Africa is huge – the airline expects to add up to 10 million new passenger trips per year to the region’s current passenger flight volumes.
Key routes and destinations
The airline’s headquarters and primary air hub will be based in Lagos, with secondary hubs in Abuja and Accra, Ghana. Initially, JetWest will fly to Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano, Yola, Enugu, Asaba, Uyo, Owerri and Calabar in Nigeria, but will rapidly expand its services throughout West Africa through their Accra base.
While the airline is yet to confirm their exact future route network, it is expected that JetWest will fly to around 40 domestic and regional destinations that may include Kigali, Accra, Dakar, Abijan and Casablanca in due course.
The 2017 fleet
While the airline has not yet confirmed their fleet make up, the low cost model may mean that they don’t necessarily favour any single particular brand, however a choice such as the Airbus A320 may make a lot of sense from a fuel efficiency point of view.
The airline’s business model will involve a 40 aircraft serviced route structure which should see the business through its first 5 years of operation.
What makes JetWest different?
Virtually all of the domestic airlines currently flying in Nigeria are plagued by bad governance, poor financial management and a host of service and reliability oriented challenges. The airline has thus chosen a seasoned board and top flite executives, and are recruiting staff members with a high emphasis on attitude, passion and entrepreneurial spirit. In doing so, the airline aims to deliver super service levels and base airfares at significantly cheaper rates than those offered by existing and legacy carriers. In fact, the airline is aiming to provide domestic Nigerian flights at prices comparable to those offered by road transport providers.
As has been the case with low cost carriers like Easyjet, RyanAir and FlySafair, it is hoped that this will unlock a whole new segment of the air travel market, namely people who have never flown before.
In doing so, the airline seeks to establish a “new normal” benchmark for passenger flight excellence in Nigeria.
