About the airline – route and schedule information
Imo has just become the first Nigerian state to have its own airline. Launched on 25 January and operated in partnership with Dana Air, the airline is expected to operate regular scheduled flights to Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Sokoto as well as other major states in the Federation.
Imo Air will immediately enter into competition with the likes of Arik Air on the flight route between Owerri and Lagos, as well as Owerri and Abuja. The Imo government is hopeful that the airline will stimulate interstate trade and create significant job opportunities. Importers and exporters will be able to make use of the airline, thus reducing their earlier reliance on other international airports in Nigeria.
During the Imo governor’s airline launch speech, he said that this is a happy moment for the State, and that the objective of entering the aviation business is to drive traffic to Imo as the state is becoming the fastest developing City outside Abuja and Lagos.
Partnership with Dana Air
The public-private partnership, entered into for a period of 10 years, was required as the Imo Government does not have a license to operated scheduled passenger flights. The fleet will initially consist of five 140 seater aircraft, with an additional four expected to be delivered in due course.
Imo Air flight launch date
It is expected that Imo Air will take to the skies of Nigeria by April 2017. Online bookings, however should be available before then.
The Communications Manager for Dana Air is quoted as saying that the partnership was born out of their desire to increase business activities in Imo, improve tourism drive, diversify its economy and provide employment opportunities for the state’s citizens.
According to Dana Air’s Accountable Manager, the airline has flown over 4.5 million passengers in the last eight years of its operations, and is one of Nigeria’s top airlines with more than 25 scheduled flights being operated between Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Uyo per day.
