About the airline
Founded in 2006, Fly540 is a low cost Kenyan airline based in Nairobi. Boasting a fleet of 5 aircraft, the airline operates scheduled passenger and freight flights to 8 domestic and 2 regional destinations. The airline commenced flight operations between Nairobi and Mombasa in late 2014. An earlier investor, Lonrho Africa, is understood to have paid $1.5 million for a 49% stake in the business. The airline’s passenger volumes rose by 93% during the first year of operations alone.
In mid 2012, Fly540 was sold for $85 million to Rubicon Diversified Investments, which would go on to become Fastjet Plc. This group purchased the airline from Lonrho Africa, with a view to establish Africa’s first fully fledged low cost carrier building on the EasyJet model’s success in Europe.
The airline recently got rapped over the knuckles for uncompetitive pricing behavior against local domestic competitor Jambojet Airlines.
The airline used to have 2 subsidiaries – Fly540 Ghana, and Fly540 Angola – but both discontinued operations during 2014 due to unfavourable market conditions and financial pressures. The airline does, however, have plans for East African expansion during 2017 and beyond. Fly540 Ghana was sold by Fastjet, and resumed flight operations as Royal Fly540 (now Fly-GH). Flights were subsequently suspended, but the airline is expected to be relaunched during 2017.
