About the airline
Founded in 1953 and headquartered in Cologne, Germany, Lufthansa is the biggest European and German airline measured both in terms of fleet size and passengers carried. Boasting a fleet of 268 aircraft, excluding the fleets of its subsidiary airlines, and flying to 220 destinations around the glob, Lufthansa is one of the world’s most recognized and respected international airline brands.
The airline was a government owned enterprise and flag carrier until 1994, when the company became privatized. According to its annual report, the airline’s shares are 60% owned by institutional investors, and 40% owned by private individuals. The company has also been running an employee profit share scheme since 1970.
By 2015 the airline employed around 120,000 full time staff members across its global operations, and reported revenues of €32.056 billion, and a net income of €1.698 billion during the same financial year. By the beginning of 2016, the airline’s assets were valued at €32.462 billion.
The airline counts several airlines and related businesses among its subsidiaries, including Lufthansa Cargo and CityLine Eurowings, Air Dolimiti (an Italian regional airline), Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Edelweiss Airlines and Germanwings, a Cologned based low cost carrier. The airline also has a 45% shareholding in Brussels Airlines, and jointly owns Sun Express, a Turkish leisure airline, with Turkish Airlines.
The airline is a founding member of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance, and has codeshare agreements in place with a number of other international airlines.

Lufthansa’s primary air hub is situated at Frankfurt International Airport, with secondary air hub based at Munich airport. It operates domestic flight services to 18 domestic destinations and 197 international destinations across Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe.

Fleet
As of July 2016, the Lufthansa fleet consisted of 30 Airbus A319-100s, 58 Airbus A320-200s, 2 Airbus A320neos, with an additional 59 on order, 20 Airbus A321-100s, 19 Airbus A330,300s, as well as 24 Airbus A340-600s, among others.
Codeshare Agreements
By 2016, Lufthansa had codesharing agreements in place with Air Malta, LATAM, Germanwings, Luxair and BMI Regional airline, amongst others.
Classes of travel
As of 2016, Lufthansa offers passengers four classes of travel:

Baggage Allowance
The following basic regulations apply for the free baggage allowance on all intercontinental flights operated by Lufthansa:
- First Class: 3 bags up to 32kg each
- Business Class: 2 bags up to 32kg each
- Premium Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23kg each
- Economy Class: 1 bag up to 23kg in weight
