About the airline
Founded in 1977 and headquartered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya Airways was the first African airline to become successfully privatised in 1996. The airline currently operates as a public private partnership, with the Kenyan Government holding 29.8% of the shares, and KLM holding 26.7% ownership. The remaining share allocation is owned privately, with company shares being traded on the Uganda Securities Exchange and the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
The airline operates a s fleet of 45 aircraft flying to 62 international destinations, including regular direct flights between Lagos in Nigeria and Nairobi in Kenya. It is the fourth largest African airline in terms of seat capacity, after South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Egypt Air.
Kenya Airways counts African Cargo Handling Ltd., JamboJet as well as Kenya Airfreight Handling Ltd. Among its subsidiaries. By 2013, the airline was reporting revenues of KSh 98.8 million, with a net profit of over KSh 7.8 million. The company’s total asset base was valued at KSh 12.670 million during the same financial year. The airline employs around 3,900 full time staff members across its various regional operations.
The airline is a full member of the SkyTeam alliance, and its frequent flyer programme is called Flying Blue.
Key routes and flight destinations
As of July 2016, the airline flies from Nairobi to Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria, to London, Addis Ababa, Frankfurt, Athens, Cairo, Copenhagen, Karachi, Kampala, Luska, Rom, Salisbury and the Seychelles, among other key destinations. The airline also flies to Dubai, Mosco, Abijan, Mauritius, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Guangzhou, Beijing, Sydney, Seoul, Cape Town, Durban and East London via its codeshare partnerships.
Codeshare agreements
As of 2015, the airline had codesharing agreements in place with Air France, Air Namibia, Etihad Airways, Jet Airways, KLM, TAAG Angola, Qantas and Air Mauritius, among other airlines.
Future expansion plans
The airline is working towards adding 24 flight destinations to its network by 2021, and intends to start operating flights to Australia, South and North America as well as Asia as part of this project. Key new destinations that have been slated for inclusion in their international flight route network includes Sao Paulo and various Chinese cities.
While the airline has had to brace for forex losses in Nigeria and have had to retrench staff to streamline profitability, the airline is anticipating being able to start repatriating payment from Nigeria as of July 2016.
Fleet
As of July 2016, the airlines fleet includes 8 Boeing 737-800s, 7 Boeing 787-8s as well as 15 Embraer 190s, among other aircraft models.

- Business: 2 pieces, each weighing no more than 32kg.
