Ethiopian Airlines, sometimes erroneously referred to as Ethiopian Airways, is the flag carrier airline of Ethiopia and one of the country’s major international export brands. The airline, established in April 1946, is wholly owned by the Ethiopian Government and has been operating international flights since as early as 1951. During 2012 alone, the airline transported 4.64 million passengers worldwide. It is also one of the few airlines in Sub-Saharan Africa presently running profitably.
Ethiopian Airlines flies to more African destinations than any other carrier, and is counted as one of the fasted growing airlines in the world.
The airline is headquartered at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, flying to over 80 destinations, including over 50 African cities. Key routes include flights to Johannesburg, Guangzhou, Beijing and Nairobi. The airline also flies to 7 European destinations, 16 Middle East and Asian cities, as well as two American destinations. The airline announced its intention to start operating flights to Latin America in 2012, yet no further details or timelines were disclosed at the time. Recently added international destinations include Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Singapore.
Ethiopian was the first African airline to order up to 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2005, and was also the first carrier on the continent to order a Boeing 777-200LR. As of 2014, the airline’s fleet includes Airbus A350-900s, Boeing 737-400s, Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800s, and Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s, among other aircraft.
