About the airline
Founded in 1944, Iran Air (www.iranair.com) is the state airline of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the oldest airline in the Middle East. As the country’s flag carrier airline, Iran Air operates regular scheduled flights to 58 international destinations, with expansion plans that kicked off in 2016 seeing the airline gearing up to service numerous new routes in Canada, the United States, Australia and Europe.
The airline is headquartered at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, and carries an estimated 6 million passengers per year. It is also referred to by its Persian acronym, HOMA, and counts Iran Air Cargo, Iran Airtour (a low cost carrier) and the Homa Hotel Group among its subsidiaries.
By 2013, the airline was reporting annual revenues in excess of $329 million, with a staff head count in excess of 10,500 full time employees across its various branches and operations.
The airline has been intent on upgrading its ageing fleet for quite some time, but only managed to come to commercial terms with Boeing Co in December 2016. The historic deal is the biggest one entered into between a US company and Iran, and will see Boeing supplying the airline with 80 jetliners over the course of the next decade. The first aircraft are expected to be delivered during 2018, yet the deal is likely to face strong opposition from the United States congress and the new president himself, who is a vocal opponent
European rivals Airbus Group SE are planning selling around 118 jets to Iran Air as well.
Iran Air (IR) has offices in several international hubs around the world, including offices in Paris, London, Frankfurt, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Ankara, Doha, Amsterdam and Milan.
