About the airline
Founded in December 1945, Ethiopian Airlines (IATA: ET) is the flag carrier airline of Ethiopia. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the airline is a key export brand for the country. It is wholly owned by the Ethiopian Government, and commenced operations in 1946.
Today, the airline boasts a fleet of 77 aircraft, and flies to over 100 passenger destinations and 23 cargo destinations worldwide. The airline flies to more destinations in Africa than any other carrier. It became a member of the Star Alliance in 2011, and is one of the few profitable airlines in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Flight Routes and Destinations
As of late 2014, Ethiopian Airlines flies to over 80 international destinations and 20 domestic ones. The airline counts 13 cities in Europe and the Americas, and over 20 in the Middle East and Asia among its key destinations. Additional, Ethiopian also flies to Abuja, Kaduna Accra, Entebbe, Frankfurt, Harare, Kilimanjaro, Lagos, London, Lusaka, Maputo, Mombasa, Mumbai and Rome. As of January 2015, the airline will be adding three weekly flights from Cape Town to its existing Johannesburg to Addis Ababa route.
The airline’s five highest volume air routes are from Addis Ababa to Johannesburg, Dubai, Guangzhou, Nairobi and Beijing, respectively. During 2012 the airline revealed that it had ambitions to grow its market share in Latin America, yet no timelines were provided for this route expansion project.
Ethiopian Airline in the news
During October 2015, the airline announced that it would be acquiring 15 to 20 new Boeing 777X Jetliners with a view to upgrade and expand its existing fleet. The airline also won the 2015 Rising Start Carrier of the Year award, boding well for both its brand and service recognition.
In February 2005, the airline entered an agreement to buy up to 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, becoming the first African airline to acquire such sophisticated aircraft in volume. As of 2015, the Ethiopian fleet consists of Boeing 737s, Boeing 777s, as well as Boeing 757s.
As of 2014, Ethiopian Airlines had codeshare agreements in place with a host of international airlines, including Air India, Air China, Egypt Air, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, FlySAA, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines, to name but a few.
