Delta Airlines (www.delta.com) is a leading American airline headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Along with its subsidiary airlines and regional partners and affiliates, the carrier operates more than 5,000 daily flights to over 310 destinations in 54 countries.
Delta Airlines is celebrating 10 years of flights to Africa, and has carried more than 4.2 million passengers between the USA and Africa during the past decade.
The airline commenced operations in 1929, making it one of the world’s oldest operating airlines, and was one of the four founding members of the SkyTeam airline alliance. The airline has key air hubs at Amsterdam’s Schipol International Airport, France’s Charles de Gaulle International Airport, as well as at the Cincinnati, Detroit Metropolitan, Atlanta, JFK, LaGuardia, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Seattle International Airports.
The company reported revenues in excess of $40 billion by as early as 2015, with a net income of over $900 million and a total asset value of over $53 billion. During the same year, the company employed over 80,000 staff members across its international operations. Regional services are operated under the Delta Connection airline brand.
During 2013, Delta was the world’s biggest airline in terms of the volume of passengers carried on scheduled flights (over 120 million passengers transported).
Key routes and destinations
As of January 2017, the airline is flying to over 310 domestic, regional and international destinations across six continents. Key destinations include Lagos, Accra, Copenhagen, Dakar, Johannesburg, Moscow, Prague, Reykjavik and Stuttgart. In addition, the airline also flies to Atlanta, Detroit, Salt Lake City, New York, Dubai, Prague, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Warswa, Delhi, Montreal, Edmonton, Dusseldorf Amsterdam, London, Tokyo, Glasgow, Geneva, Mexico City, Hong Kong, Lima, Lisbon, Madrid, Manchester, Paris and Honolula, to name but a few international destinations.
The Delta Fleet – 2017
By the beginning of 2017, the airline boasted a fleet of over 830 aircraft, making it one of the biggest airlines in the world in terms of fleet size. The fleet consists of a mix of Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas aircraft, with Boeing comprising around 60& of the total fleet, with the other 40% split evenly between Airbuses and McDonnell Douglas planes. Significantly, Delta also operates the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 717s, 757s and 767s. A merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008 saw the airline acquire another 200 aircraft over the period 2013 to 2016. Key models in the 2017 fleet includes 57 Airbus A319-100s, 69 A321-200s, 91 Boeing 717-200s, 73 Boeing 737-800s, as well as 69 Boeing 737-900ERs and 89 Boeing 757-200s.
The airline recently cancelled their order for 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which the airline inherited during the merger with NorthWest Airlines.
